Ebook About An updated edition that sheds new light on one of the most dramatic reversals of military fortune in modern history. The easing of Israeli military censorship after four decades has enabled Abraham Rabinovich to offer fresh insights into this fiercest of Israel-Arab conflicts. A surprise Arab attack on two fronts on the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, with Israel’s reserves un-mobilized, triggered apocalyptic visions in Israel, euphoria in the Arab world, and fraught debates on both sides. Rabinovich, who covered the war for The Jerusalem Post, draws on extensive interviews and primary source material to shape his enthralling narrative. We learn of two Egyptian nationals, working separately for the Mossad, who supplied Israel with key information that helped change the course of the war; of Defense Minister Moshe Dayan’s proposal for a nuclear “demonstration” to warn off the Arabs; and of Chief of Staff David Elazar’s conclusion on the fifth day of battle that Israel could not win. Newly available transcripts enable us to follow the decision-making process in real time from the prime minister’s office to commanders studying maps in the field. After almost overrunning the Golan Heights, the Syrian attack is broken in desperate battles. And as Israel regains its psychological balance, General Ariel Sharon leads a nighttime counterattack across the Suez Canal through a narrow hole in the Egyptian line -- the turning point of the war.Book The Yom Kippur War: The Epic Encounter That Transformed the Middle East Review :
I followed up reading Six Days of War with this excellent history. This was a far different war than 1967. The Arabs caught Israel totally by surprise. The war caught both the US and the USSR by surprise. Israel expected two weeks warning, and got six hours. There was a complete intelligence failure by Israel, despites warnings from sources in Egypt and King Hussain in Jorden. And the Israeli leadership was a captive of their memories of the six-day war. This time, the Arabs had been well trained to stand and fight. They were equipped with SAM-6 missiles that kept the Israeli air force at bay and cost them dearly. They were equipped with numerous RPGs and Saggar missiles that meant Egyptian infantry could devastate Israeli tanks. There was also an almost complete failure of the top political and military leadership. What retrieved the situation for Israel was the professionalism, courage, and tenacity of Israel’s soldiers and airmen. Rabinovich has the ability to take you to their level so you see the war through their eyes. The story of how Lt. Zvika Greengold, in one tank, stopped a Syrian advance, destroying numerous tanks and vehicles, is unforgettable. But there were hundreds like it. Israel lost more men per capita in the war than the US did in WWII. Still, it was a near-run thing. Anyone interested in military history, modern war, or Israel will appreciate this book. Besides giving some detailed descriptions of combat on the both the Syrian and Egyptian fronts, the author gives us a "big picture" description of the war from the days preceding the war when Israeli intelligence utterly failed to protect the nation to the geo-political maneuvering to bring the war to an end. Besides the description of combat, the book looks at the military planning and execution from a high level: the generals. We also see Moshe Dyan and Golda Meir in action. This is book is more than a good read about an important conflict, it is a catalog of success and failure at the leadership level. I also recommend The Heights of Courage: A Tank Leader's War On the Golan by Avigdor Kahalani to see combat at the tank battalion level and Duel for the Golan: The 100-Hour Battle That Saved Israel by Jerry Asher to hear more detail about tank combat in the Golan. I think the book by Abraham Rabinovich is an important book to understand the important role of leadership in war.
